New eLearning portal to boost legal learning and skills

Law Society set to play a pivotal role in building Singapore as knowledge hub

Singapore, 25 October 2002 - A new online learning portal providing instant access to information on law and practice is the latest buzz among Singapore's legal fraternity.

The Law Society of Singapore, in partnership with IT service provider CrimsonLogic, launched its eLearning portal as the latest initiative in providing continuous legal education for lawyers, professionals and the public at large with Associate Professor Ho Peng Kee, Senior Minister of State for Law and Home Affairs, as the Guest Of Honour. Professionals in disciplines such as medicine, architecture, engineering, finance to name a few will also benefit from the legal knowledge and skills acquired from cross-disciplinary courses such as building law or medico-legal issues.

The Law Society aims to have at least 250 members registered by end of this year. Says President of the Law Society Mr Palakrishnan, SC, “We envisage that the knowledge acquired by lawyers and other professionals will have positive spin-offs. With overseas users signing up as well, we are confident that the portal will do its bit in enhancing Singapore's status as a legal knowledge hub.”

The Law Society plans to boost its online course content by engaging foreign subject matter experts through tie-ups with overseas faculties and law associations. “The portal will be as rich in content as it is in features, as the key drivers for successful eLearning adoption would be relevancy and educational value of course materials provided,” added Mr Palakrishnan, SC.

Presently, lawyers can tap into learning materials on fundamental topics such as civil procedure as well as emerging trends in IT and intellectual property. Content providers are known experts within Singapore, such as Mr Leslie Chew, SC, Mr Tan Tee Jim, SC, and Mr Harpreet Singh, among others. The eLearning initiative is an extension of the on-going seminars and talks organized by the Law Society.

Supported by a sophisticated learning management system on a reliable and secure infrastructure, learning on this portal will be easy, engaging, interactive and convenient.

Said Mr V Mathivanan, Chief Executive Officer of CrimsonLogic, “eLearning is more than just online or distance learning. We have a proprietary methodology to ensure that learning is effective, maximising post-training retention with the help of tools such as interactive quizzes, question and answer discussion rooms, self-progress monitoring, testing and grading facilities.”

“IDA Singapore has projected Singapore's market for eLearning products and services to be worth US$62 million by 2005, almost a seven-fold increase from last year's US$9 million. Using an Application Service Provider such as CrimsonLogic makes eLearning adoption a cinch as institutions, professional associations and corporations need not invest heavily in IT talent nor infrastructure to plug into the benefits and convenience of eLearning.”

CrimsonLogic provides a total eLearning solution comprising content development, learning management system and supporting infrastructure to ensure constant quality and secure delivery. This ensures that the learner can chart his learning path, pace his studying pattern, track his progress, and obtain technical assistance anytime of the day without disrupting his working schedule.
